Actor-turned-director Stephen Chow (周星驰) is wooing “Sex Goddess” Shu Qi (舒淇), the lead actress in his latest film Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons (西游·降魔篇).

To get the 36-year-old former porn star on board, Stephen breached a contract already signed with a mainland actress he had already handed the lead role.

He reportedly had to pay her off.

As Shu Qi insisted she should should get more screen time, another actress Chrissie Chau (周秀娜) had her scenes cut.

According to the film crew, Stephen was always on set when Shu Qi had a part to play. Then, he would order work was wrapped up on time so he could arrange dinner dates with her.

Moreover, Stephen arranged Shu Qi to sing the film’s theme song, although she is not known for her singing.

Some fans believe Stephen is making advances merely to take revenge on Shu Qi’s rumored boyfriend Stephen Fung (冯德伦), also a talented actor-turned-director.

The two Stephens’ relationship turned sour when they worked on the film Jump (跳出去) in 2008. They have hated each other since then.

Both men previously dated singers Karen Mok (莫文蔚) and Vivian Hsu (徐若瑄).

Shu Qi denied that Stephen Chow is courting her. She also refused to comment on whether she and another man, also named Stephen, are an item.

Taiwan screen stars such as Shu Qi (舒淇), Lin Chi-ling (林志玲), Gwei Lun-mei (桂綸鎂), Takeshi Kaneshiro, Eddie Peng (彭于妟) and Chang Chen (張震) have garnered a lot of attention from Chinese audiences in recent years and established themselves as guaranteed box office successes.

Chinese film If You Are the One, directed by renowned Director Feng Xiaogang (冯小刚), which featured multi-award winning actress Shu Qi, was very well received in China.

The second installment of the movie clinched the title of “fifth biggest hit in the country’s box office history” as soon as it premiered. The total box office sales of the two movies is estimated to be worth NT$3.76 billion ($129 million).

Taiwan supermodel-turned-actress Lin Chi-ling is now a much sought-after figure in the film industry after her maiden movie appearance in the Red Cliff series.

The 38-year-old has two upcoming films 101st Marriage Proposal and Switch, both slated to be released in China next year.

Gwei Lun-mei, the freshly crowned Best Leading Actress at the 49th Taipei Golden Horse Awards, was also nominated for the Best Supporting Actress award at the People’s Hundred Flower Award, which is one of the most prestigious film award ceremonies in China, for her role in Flying Swords of Dragon Gate.

As for the men, Japanese-Taiwanese heartthrob Takeshi Kaneshiro remains a crowd-puller, while Chang Chen’s performance in The Last Supper was widely praised after the film screened in China.

While these brooding lead actors top the list with their screen appeal, Eddie Peng steals the limelight from his showbiz seniors and is ranked numero uno with his multiple box office successes this year. The actor, who is gradually focusing his acting career in movies starred in Taichi 0 and Taichi II which grossed approximately NT$1.24 billion in total.

Furthermore, the 30-year-old also participated in Taiwanese and Hong Kong productions, Love and Cold War, respectively, and the total box office sales for his four films exceeded NT$3 billion.

Sean Lau (刘青云) of Hong Kong and Gwei Lun-mei (桂綸鎂) of Taiwan were crowned Best Leading Actor and Best Leading Actress at the super star-studded 49th Golden Horse Awards (金馬獎) ceremony held in Taiwan on Saturday night.

Sean won the jury’s praise for his impressive performance as a rogue in Life Without Principle (夺命金).

When he was presented the award, his actress wife Amy Kwok (郭蔼明) sitting in the audience burst into tears.

“When I won the award, I only looked at my wife. She arranged everything today. She must be very touched,” said Sean, who is known for being a devoted husband.

The 28-year-old Gwei Lun-mei won by a very narrow margin over Hao Lei (郝蕾) in the Best Leading Actress category. Other nominees included Bai Baihe (白百何), Denise Ho (何韵诗) and Sandrine Pinna (張榕容).

This is the first award Lun-mei has pocketed since she entered showbiz at the age of 18, in 2002. She was also tearful in her acceptance speech.

It also helped Taiwan regain the important honor, after seven years of waiting since Shu Qi (舒淇) was made the best leading actress at this annual awards ceremony, in 2005.

Ronald Cheng (郑中基) won Best Supporting Actor for the outrageous black comedy Vulgaria (低俗喜剧).

Liang Jing (梁静), a sexy mom of two kids, expressed her surprise when she was handed the Best Supporting Actress award for Design of Death (杀生), in which she turned into a super ugly midwife with snaggleteeth.

The ceremony’s grand prize, Best Feature Film, went to Beijing Blues (神探亨特张), directed by Gao Qunshu (高群书).

Johnnie To (杜琪峰) won Best Director for Life Without Principle, while Chang Jung-Chi (張榮吉) was made Best New Director for Touch of the Light (逆光飛翔).

Qi Xi (齊溪) of Mystery (浮城谜事) was rated as Best New Performer.

Hong Kong heartthrob Andy Lau (刘德华), crowned best leading actor last year, sat on the jury panel for this year’s awards ceremony.

He said it was really difficult to be on a jury, jokingly adding, “Let me tell you, those who win awards can thank the awards jury, and those who lost can come to me (for an explanation).”

At 2am on Sunday, Lee-hom’s BMW sedan picked up model Lin Hsiao-yun (林筱筠) in Taipei and drove her back to the pop singer’s luxurious house.

The 30-year-old Hsiao-yun stayed in his place for a good 12 hours and was only seen again at 2pm when Lee-hom left his house in the BMW, while Hsiao-yun closely followed in a taxi.

When confronted by the media, Lee-hom’s manager said Hsiao-yun was one of the friends who attended the Halloween party in Lee-hom’s house, denying that she is Lee-hom’s new love.

During their recent Tokyo trip, Stephen prepared a diamond ring to propose to Shu Qi at dinner, with the actress’ mother in attendance, according to Hong Kong media.

A tearful Shu Qi happily said, “Yes!”

It is unknown when the two will tie the knot but the 36-year-old actress plans to follow Stephen and work with Huayi Brothers Media Corporation, after her contract with media tycoon Peter Lam (林建岳) concludes in October.

The couple has known each other for nearly 20 years.

They were together for some time when they worked on the film Bishonen (美少年の恋) in 1997.

It was rumored after Shu Qi broke up with Leon Lai (黎明), she secretly dated Stephen for six months.

Their affair angered Stephen’s then girlfriend Karen Mok (莫文蔚), who chose to end her relationship with Stephen.

Shu Qi admitted they did board the same flight from Hong Kong but denied they are an item.

The 36-year-old actress said she was heading for Tokyo to holiday with her mom and two friends; while Stephen was on a work trip.

She stressed that they have known each other for nearly 20 years and thought of each other as family.

However, the two were together for some time when they worked on the film Bishonen (美少年の恋) in 1997.

Rumors of the couple reuniting have flared up a few times since then and they have often appeared at events together.

In April, they were spotted drinking and partying at night clubs in Hong Kong’s Lan Kwai Fong.

Stephen used to be in a relationship with Vivian Hsu (徐若瑄), after Shu Qi introduced them.

Taiwan actress Vivian Hsu (徐若瑄) has fallen victim to cyberbullying as an anonymous person has been posting false information on a China-based forum pretending to be her.

The post reads: “I’m not Chinese. I’m Taiwanese. I don’t want to develop my career in China anymore … No matter what the results will be, I won’t go to that country anymore … You Japanese must support us. Mainland China bullies us, Taiwan.”

The post, which was soon reposted on many other Chinese forums, triggered waves of criticism from Chinese netizens, who slammed Vivian for being a “Japanese dog.”

The furious Vivian deleted all the posts on her own officially verified microblog, which has more than 6.6 million followers.

She revealed her anger in the introduction, on her account page: “No matter who you are and what purpose you have. You used my name to publish fabricated and ridiculous statements. I believe Sina will bring justice to me.”

Vivian has become the second Taiwan celebrity, after Shu Qi (舒淇), to shut down her microblog account in protest at irrational and negative comments posted on her account pages.

Shu Qi deleted all her posts, except one, on her microblog account in March after trolls took vengeance on her support of Hong Kong kungfu star Donnie Yen (甄子丹), who was mired in a war of words with mainland peer Zhao Wenzhuo (赵文卓).

Shu Qi just returned to microblogging this month.
