GAY DIVING COMMENTS GET TV ANCHOR INTO HOT WATER
British diving star Tom Daley vs. China's sports commentator Zhang Mengmeng
China’s State TV diving commentator is in hot water after making anti-homosexual and discriminatory comments about male divers.
She forgot to turn off her microphone during the broadcast of the men’s 10m platform final and her words have angered many.
Zhang Mengmeng (张萌萌), former synchronized swimming athlete and a sports commentator at China Central Television (CCTV) since 2005, was heard during the live broadcast, saying, “I presume (Tom) Daley doesn’t stand a chance” when the British diving star stood on the platform.
Then, when David Boudia of the United States appeared, she added, “All of them are weird, they’re either from single-parent families or something like that” (the latter comment hinting that male divers are gay).
Daley’s father died of a brain tumor in May 2011, while Australian diver Matthew Mitcham publicly came out as gay in 2008.
As soon as these ridiculous comments were broadcast, many netizens slammed her for “lacking professional ethics” and some media outlets demanded that she apologize.
Mengmeng, however, complained in her microblog that she was framed by the director.
