Xu Fan crowned queen at Asian Film Awards

SOLICITUDE: The state of being concerned and anxious/ attentive care and protectiveness; also: an attitude of earnest concern or attention, ie. “she expressed solicitude for his health” — Merriam Webster

China’s Xu Fan (徐帆) beat Hollywood star Michelle Yeoh (杨紫琼) and Japan’s idol drama favorite Matsu Takako to win the Best Actress honor at the 5th Asian Film Awards Presentation Ceremony held in Hong Kong on Monday night.

She said she only thoroughly understood what “solicitude” meant after having her daughter, as the word represents love not just for her daughter, but also her husband, relatives and friends.

Xu Fan was crowned for her touching performance in Aftershock (唐山大地震), directed by her hubby Feng Xiaogang (冯小刚).

China’s Ge You (葛优), Hong Kong’s Chow Yun-fat (周润发) and Taiwan’s Ethan Juan (阮經天) relinquished the Best Actor trophy to Korea’s Ha Jung-woo.

China’s two most popular directors, Feng Xiaogang and Jiang Wen (姜文) — despite the strong box office takings of their works, Aftershock and Let the Bullets Fly (让子弹飞), respectively — failed to win Best Director, which went to Korea’s Lee Chang-dong for his Poetry.

Other winners included:

Best Supporting Actor: Hong Kong’s Sammo Hung (洪金宝) in Ip Man 2 (叶问2)

Best Supporting Actress: Korea’s Yoon Yeo-jeong in The Housemaid

Best Newcomer: Taiwan’s Mark Chao (趙又廷) in Monga (艋舺)

Best Film: Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives from Thailand

Best Visual Effects: Aftershock

Best Costume Design: William Chang (张叔平) for Let the Bullets Fly

A-list celebrities walking the red carpet and gracing the stage included Huang Xiaoming (黃曉明), Zhang Ziyi (章子怡), Aaron Kwok (郭富城) and celebrity couple Tony Leung (梁朝伟) and Carina Lau (刘嘉玲).
