Is Wang Lee-hom cheap or frugal?
Wang Lee-hom (王力宏) has been taking pot shots at celebrities who have more money than sense.
The frugal A-lister criticized stars like Jay Chou (周杰倫), Show Luo (羅志祥), Aaron Kwok (郭富城) and Jimmy Lin (林志穎), who like to buy lots of fast and expensive cars.
“Buying sports cars is what the nouveau riches do. It’s meaningless,” he said when interviewed by Taiwan host Georgina Fang (方念華) on her program.
Lee-hom made a healthy NT$160 million (NT$5 million) last year, but proudly shared off the “Jackie Chan brand” socks his martial arts friend gave him, saying even his socks cost nothing.
He said the only car he has bought since he became a singer 15 years ago was a second-hand car, worth NT$60,000 (US$1,950), which was a birthday gift he bought for himself last year on the Internet.
In comparison, Jay owns at least 12 cars, including the “Batmobile” that appeared in the film Batman.
Among Aaron’s collection of 13 cars, the most expensive one is the rare “Pagani Zonda.”
Show just forked out NT$9.5 million (US$309,400) on an Audi R8 sports car for his birthday.
Jimmy has a yellow Ferrari 360, worth about NT$16 million (US$519,000).

That’s a really well considered and well written comment. You should contribute more often X
I’ve always respected Wang Lee Hom and have really liked how he puts a lot of focus on giving back to the needy and protecting the environment. It’s extremely rare to find a big name celebrity who is so humble and down to earth.
However, I just feel Lee Hom is somewhat crossing the line in criticizing the spending habits of other celebs. When you’re a celebrity, you become associated with luxury/material goods, and high end cars are probably the first thing that come to mind. If anything, celebs such as Show Luo and Aaron Kwok for example, have all earned their money through hard work, and they should be able to choose what they want to spend their money on. And Jimmy Lin is famous in the F1 racing world – of course he’s gonna own expensive sports cars. For one thing, luxury/material goods may seem “meaningless” to LeeHom because many people know that he comes from a wealthy family, thus he’s probably seen it all. But some of these celebrities probably didn’t grow up in such a family as LeeHom did, so…I think he’s not really in the right to look down on them or their materialistic habits.
To me, having luxury and material goods is part of the whole celebrity persona. I mean, if LeeHom doesn’t want any of that, to each his own, but he shouldn’t be talking against others because LeeHom himself is a celebrity and part of the entertainment circle.
He’s one of the few celebs out there who seems to be grounded and not act like he’s a hip hop star or someone like that all bling bling bling
It’s very difficult not to become “material.” Lee-hom still spends money on other things, say expensive musical instruments and luxurious houses. But I admire the fact that he doesn’t buy that many expensive “toys.”
