A Japanese magazine and a social networking website recently held a poll to select the year’s top 10 “Nerdy Guy Goddesses” (宅男女神), which sort of represents Japanese young men’s preferences for the opposite sex.

Not surprisingly, beauties Lin Chi-ling (林志玲), Vivian Hsu (徐若瑄), Crystal Liu (刘亦菲) and Jolin Tsai (蔡依林) — from Greater China — are on the shortlist of 30.

But China actress Zhou Dongyu (周冬雨), who plays the leading role Jing Qiu (静秋) in director Zhang Yimou’s (张艺谋) film Romance Under the Hawthorne Tree (山楂树之恋), was also a contender and among the top 30.

No one is saying Dongyu is the most beautiful woman out there, or has the best figure, but Japanese otaku (nerds) are all agreed that a pure and innocent image makes a woman that much more attractive.

It’s also validation for Yimou, who obviously knows a thing or two about beautiful women, having plucked Dongyu from obscurity, as he did with Gong Li (巩俐) and Zhang Ziyi (章子怡).
