From small beginnings as a folk dance major, Zhou Xun (周迅) has become one of the most popular actresses in China.
She gained international recognition for her two roles in director Lou Ye‘s (娄烨) Suzhou River (苏州河), in 2000, and was hailed, along with Vicki Zhao (赵薇), Xu Jinglei (徐静蕾) and Zhang Ziyi (章子怡), as one of China’s “Four Young Dan actresses” (四小花旦) in the early 2000s.
In 2006, her performance in the film Perhaps Love (如果爱) won her the Best Actress at the Hong Kong Film Award and Taiwan’s Golden Horse Award. Her former lover Jia Hongsheng (贾宏声), an actor she fell in love with when shooting Suzhou River, jumped to his death in early July, 2010.
