Beijing Film Academy graduate Huang Xiaoming (黄晓明) first rose to prominence just a year after graduating, in 2001, in the role of Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD) Emperor Wu, in the TV drama Da Han Tian Zi (大汉天子).
He is the best known for playing the lead character Yang Guo (杨过) in the 2006 TV series The Return of the Condor Heroes (神鵰侠侣). His appearance in another TV series Shanghai Bund (新上海滩), brought him critical acclaim.
Following in the footsteps of Chinese celebrities like Zhang Ziyi (章子怡), Lang Lang (郎朗) and Zhou Xun (周迅), Xiaoming applied to become a Hong Kong citizen in 2009, which made it more convenient for him to travel and work abroad.
Often described as an “effeminate young man,” or a “butter actor” (奶油小生) in Chinese, Xiaoming’s not-so-secret relationship with Angelababy (杨颖) made the headlines in 2010. Like his pretty lover, Xiaoming is reported to have had a series of plastic surgeries.
The motto on his website is: “If you’re not doing something the best you can, then don’t do it at all.”
